Medical Waste Management

Any waste resulting from activities of health care facilities, including hospitals, medical laboratories, blood banks, dialysis centers, biotechnology companies, medical clinics, dental clinics, drug factories, research centers, pharmacies, and medical stores. Wastes also include bandages, syringes, needles, sharps, mops and drugs, pharmaceutical products, laboratory farms, human and animal tissues, and blood and body secretions, in addition to any other similar or related materials that are capable of causing infection or harm.

Medical Waste Collection

The medical wastes are collected from the health facilities through WEKAYA work team personnel who are trained to deal with these wastes according to the highest standards of safety through a vehicle fleet equipped with cooling system to transfer these wastes to the treatment plant in hygienic conditions specified based on the nature of the waste. The number of times in which the service of WEKAYA is provided to the health facilities ranges from one visit per week to one visit per day, depending on the size of the facility. WEKAYA also provides hospitals with 120 liter containers for collecting medical waste and these containers are replaced with disinfected ones at each visit.

Treatment

WEKAYA is the only body which provides its services based on the number of visits and NOT on the weight thereof, in order to ensure that no medical waste is disposed with the general waste. The treatment is carried out at the medical waste treatment plant located in Alsajaa near the landfill. The medical waste pass through several stages before treatment and disposal, as we rely on automated reader system to determine the source and types of waste. Upon arrival of the vehicle containing the medical waste, the waste is weighed and the data is electronically recorded in the corporate database. Then, the work team of WEKAYA puts such wastes in the main container which enters the processing device. The treatment cycle lasts 45 minutes, as WEKAYA uses the latest systems and technologies which are environmental friendly, in order for such waste to be ready after treatment to the process for final safe disposa

Waste disposal

WEKAYA, in collaboration with Sharjah Municipality, managed to prevent the disposal of medical waste having hazardous nature with the general waste, and to prevent the random disposal of the wastes and disposing them without treatment, as all medical waste pass through WEKAYA for the purpose of documenting the quantities and types, then they are processed and safely disposed of in the landfill.
